Review: If the prize were given for further direction, this would win hands down. homage to Tolstoy, history came through the fog of metaphor and click?, from the stage play-within-a-movie (our only guess as to meaning is to skimp on location shooting) actors revolving around each other for breaking the cards (and about any aspect of a meaning to life) - to the point of throwing in the trash, only to come as snow (could be worse). With a history as Anna Karenina seems that directors only work would be to decide which parts to omit, however, Joe Wright decided to turn it into a soap opera. It's as if he was doing Shakespeare sonnets and rhyme and correction meter. And casting Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Vronsky? When I first came out I thought they'd done parody. It reminded me of Gene Wilder in Mel Brooks version of Tolstoy. Meanwhile, Jude Law was perfect as Karenin, like Domnhall Gleeson as Levin and Countess Olivia Williams as Vronskaya. Sadly, Keira Knightly apparently thought he was still doing Pirates of the Caribbean, as Tolstoy, as can be.How two incredibly creative men, Wright, the atonement, and who gave us Stoppard Amazing Coast of Utopia, could do this is beyond comprehension.
